Recipe: Matcha Mama Smoothie Bowl, My Version

    FOOD, PLACES, RECIPES, Tulum, Mexico

Matcha Mama has become a hotspot in Tulum among health foodies and Instagram influencers. When my fiance and I were in Tulum for Thanksgiving, we made Matcha Mama a priority. There are two Matcha Mama locations in Tulum, one in town and the other at the beach. We visited the one in town in search of their classic smoothie bowls.

Matcha Mama is known for its fun, vibrant, bohemian vibes, swings, and large “I love Tulum so Matcha” signage. The floors and walls are made of distressed white wood and the roof of palm leaves. I thought the place was adorable and would recommend it to someone looking for a healthy or refreshing treat.

    Finding Matcha Mama

I plugged “Matcha Mama” into Google Maps and it lead us right there. It was in an area with other food stands and vegan restaurants on a side street. It is not far off the main road.

My fiance and I both ordered smoothie bowls. I ordered the classic acai berry bowl but they had many options on the menu including kombucha, vegan ice cream, coffee, and of course matcha drinks.

They were very friendly and made sure we loved our bowls. I loved my bowl so much I decided to go home and make my own version based on the one I had at Matcha Mama. I have been obsessed with smoothie bowls for the last month. It’s a healthy and refreshing meal at any time during the day and it’s quick and easy!

When I was vegan for four years, smoothies were one of my go-to meals. I’ve determined that the key to a good smoothie is frozen berries with any or all of the following; a banana, peanut butter, or good protein powder. This will help you get a thick smoothie as the one Matcha Mama made. I hope you enjoy!

    Easy Berry Smoothie Bowl

This is my spin on the Matcha Mama smoothie bowl.

    Ingredients:
    1¼ cups frozen berries
    ½ large banana
    1 tablespoon matcha powder
    1 teaspoon honey
    ½ cup almond milk
    1 tablespoon peanut butter

    Toppings:
    ½ banana
    kiwi
    sunflower seeds
    coconut
    walnut or pecan pieces
    strawberries
    dried cranberries
    chia seeds

    Directions:

    1. Mix frozen berries, banana, almond milk, and peanut butter in a blender or smoothie machine on high until all ingredients are blended, add more milk if you don’t want your smoothie to be too thick.
    2. Pour the smoothie in a coconut bowl. They are so fun and add a tropical touch to your smoothie bowl. I bought mine here.
    3. Add toppings.
