Iowa Getaway
Carrie and Nate had told me about a Prohibition-era barn that sits on the conservancy. This barn, known as the River House Barn, is situated just east of the Templeton Rhy Whiskey distillery on a gravel road. 100 years ago, people held barn dances here. Back then, Prohibition-era was in full swing. And people used barns, like this one, to distribute alcohol. Although it’s not really stated anywhere, rumor has it that Al Capone himself made a visit a time or two.
River House Barn
We took a peek inside. I was in awe at the nearly perfect condition. Today, the two-story barn holds weddings and events. We made our way down to the basement to see if we could find any remnants from the past. To our surprise, we found a Templeton Rye whiskey sign and an original clawfoot tub. I don’t know how the tub got there or why. Regardless, everything in the barn was rustic and picture-perfect.
